Nevus (pronounced Knee-vus) - is the umbrella term for a group of benign (non-cancerous), circumscribed overgrowth of cells composed of tissue elements normally present in the skin. The most well known of the group is the melanocytic nevus (“mole”), composed of an increased proliferation of melanocytes, but multiple other types of nevi exist, such as vascular nevi, epidermal nevi, connective tissue nevi.
