What are freckles?
Freckles are common in children prior to puberty, though many adults have freckles. Freckles contain more melanin than other skin cells. They do not indicate any sort of skin disorder or disease in a normal capacity.
Freckles are circular spots that typically range in size from the head of a pen to much larger. Freckles are flat. The spots develop randomly on the skin, especially after repeated exposure to sunlight and particularly in persons of fair complexion.

How many types of freckles are there?
There are two basic types of freckles:

These types of freckle are flat spots that are red or light-brown and characteristically appear during the sunny months and become lighter in the winter. They are most often found in people with light skinned complexions and in some families, they are a hereditary (genetic) quality. By using sunscreen on a regular basis during sun exposure it will help control the appearance of the ephelis-type freckle.
• Lentigines (singular: lentigo)
If you have this type of freckle you may develop a small tan, brown, or black spot which tends to be darker than an ephelis-type freckle and which does not disappear gradually in the winter time. This kind of spot is referred to as lentigo simplex. Primarily though they are just isolated and inconsequential spots.
Where are freckles most likely to appear?
The most common place on the body for freckles to appear is the nose and cheeks, though many people have freckles on their shoulders, arms and other areas that are frequently exposed to the sun. Sometimes freckles are grouped together, making them appear larger and cover a greater portion of the skin.
