How to Wash Your Face

Hello. We know acne causes considerable emotional distress to our patients, and unfortunately, there is no magical cure for acne. In order to treat acne properly, you have to be diligent. You should rememeber though, that no treatment will eliminate acne completely. The truth about acne is; we can treat the pimples you have now, and can teach you how to keep them from coming back as frequently as you experience now. We can show you how diet and proper cleaning can keep your face free of pimples, and scar free.

When a patient comes in for acne treatment, the first thing we do is try to prevent new outbreaks for happening. We will of course do everything possible to clear up the acne you already have, and to recommend acne treatments that will speed healing, or prevent scarring. I always begin with washing instructions because you would be surprised to know that most people do not wash their faces properly. Without proper washing, the oils under the skin build up - and cause "zits".

Some patients believe they need a strong soap or cleanser to treat their acne. Actually the opposite is true. You should avoid scrubbing your face with strong soaps, they actually dry out the skin, removing the beneficial oils that your skin needs. The type of soap of cleanser we recommend varies with the skin, so there is no one type to recommend. I can recommend that you do not overdo agents such as Benzoyl Peroxide. This acne med has beneficial antibacterial effects, but Benzoyl Peroxide can really dry out the skin with just a few treatments, and it can cause your skin to peel.

Before you start, the first thing you need to do is make the water as warm as possible, (without burning your skin) (details). You can also read more about washing your face there.

Step by Step Instructions:

  1. First Open The Pores With Hot Water.
  2. Use a Clean Wash Rag
  3. Apply Soap of Cleanser
  4. Rub In Circles for 30 Seconds
  5. Focus on Problem Areas
  6. Apply Fresh Hot Water
  7. Change Water To Cold
  8. Rinse Face for 30 Seconds
  9. Pat Dry With Clean Towel
What you can expect is that once you start treatment, it may take several weeks or even months for you to see significant effects. We do ask our patients to return if treatments have not worked after several months to try other treatments. If you have severe acne, there are a wide range of other acne treatments available.

"One more thing about acne..." Stress can make acne worse. It is believed that acne outbreaks may be affected by hormonal changes that occur during the menstrual cycle which is why women experience acne during their periods. With that in mind, excessive male hormones such as testosterone may be another cause. It is also believed that contraceptive pills may cause acne breakouts. Feel free to contact us anytime about your skin condition.
