Most moles are not dangerous. The only moles that are of medical concern are those that look different than other existing moles or those that first appear after age 20. If you notice changes in your mole's color, or it's height, or size, or shape, you should have a dermatologist (or any qualified doctor) evaluate it. You also should have moles checked if they bleed, ooze, itch, appear scaly, or become tender or painful.

If you ask a dermatologist to preform your mole removal surgery, it will most often be done in a private operating room; using surgical instruments, an operating table, or other reclining equipment. Any scalpel or surgical instrument which the doctor plans to use must be pre-sterilized to avoid infection by micro-organisms.

Prior to mole removal surgery, you are given a medical examination, certain pre-operative tests. Other preparations for surgery are often done; intravenous injection and various instruments to monitor your vital signs may be attached. The skin surface to be operated on is cleaned and prepared by shaving hair in area of incision and applying an antiseptic such as betadine to avoid the possibility of infection.

Anesthesia is administered to prevent pain from incision. The anesthesia should be local anesthesia. With local anesthesia, the body area operated on is anesthetized, but you can remain conscious.

An incision is made around the mole, or skin tags to allow access. Other surgical tools (instruments) may be used to keep the incision open. It is commonly desired to keep the incision as small as possible. Once the mole or skin tag is cut away, the area may or may not be sutured. Scarring is possible.
